Whaley Bridge is a picturesque town located in the High
Peak, Derbyshire. With an attractive canal basin and the River
Goyt running through it, much of the town's history and development
is centred around the waterways and the industrial heritage attached
to them. Although well established as a tourist spot and with
numerous local accommodation options, Whaley Bridge is still a
relatively unspoilt working town. Many of today's inhabitants
commute to and work in the Manchester conurbation area, which
is readily accessible by train and bus routes.
Codes, Population and other Information
Whaley Bridge has a population of approximately 5,000 giving
it the feel of a large village and the area uses the postal code
prefix SK23. The local telephone code is 01663 and the town has
been twinned with Tymbark, Poland since June of 1994. Other towns
and villages nearby include New Mills, Furness Vale, Chapel-en-le-Frith,
Disley, High Lane and Hayfield and the area offers excellent access
to the hills of the High Peak, including Kinder Scout.
Events and Places to Visit
Whaley Bridge Canal Basin is an attractive part of the town with
the old warehouse intact and a trip boat based there, providing
leisurely trips along the canal for inland waterways enthusiasts.
The annual Well Dressing is a popular traditional event
The limestone kilns at Bugsworth Basin. The 1980s and 90s saw
a successful campaign to renovate the canal arm leading to Bugsworth
Basin and the kilns and wharfs there. The renovations have been
successfully completed and the arm and basin are now a popular
destination for boaters and walkers alike, offering an insight
into the industrial history of the area.
Hill walking and hiking are popular pastimes and many of today's
visitors to the area have a keen interest in the surrounding countryside
and the various peaks.
The Peak Forest Canal
The Canal Basin marks the end of the Peak Forest canal. From
Whaley Bridge the canal's route passes the Bugsworth arm and basin,
travelling via Furness Vale to New Mills. From here it goes to
Marple (where it meets the Macclesfield canal) and down via Romiley,
Hyde and Dukinfield to Portland Basin in Ashton-under-Lyne. There
are 16 locks at Marple separating the Upper and Lower Peak Forest.
